Our Essential Oils for Hives Story

right hand man

Sunday night my 13 year old woke up in the middle of the night complaining of itching. His back and his side were covered with hives, a reaction he has never had before. I put lavender and melaleuca all over his back and sent him back to bed. In the morning he was itching again. The hives looked worse, covering his back, up his sides, some on his stomach and on his arms.

Everythingessential.me gives the following suggestions for essential oils for hives:

Oils, blends & products recommended:

Oils & Blends:  Basil, GX Assist/PB Assist, Myrrh, Peppermint,

Essential oils based products:

Also consider: Coriander, Helichrysum, Frankincense, Lavender, Lemon, Melaleuca

Suggested protocols:

Since hives may be associated with the elimination of internal toxins many suggest detoxification using the GX Assist/PB Assist protocol; GX Assist for 10 days, PB Assist for 5 days, once a month. See more information by going to Detoxification.

Topical application of Basil or Myrrh to the affected area is suggested.

The following protocol for difficult hives was submitted:

Alternate topical application of Helichrysum and Melaleuca with Frankincense to the affected area.

First day begin at 2 hour intervals, second day 3-4 hour intervals, follow 3-4 times per day till two days after hives are gone.

Additional help by applying the same oils along the spine.

On Monday he took a TriEase (a capsule containing lemon, lavender and peppermint) in the morning and one in the evening. The peppermint could help with the itching, the lavender acts as an antihistamine and the lemon assists in elimination of toxins. I also rubbed a blend of coconut oil, Helichrysum, lavender and frankincense over his skin. This did bring some relief. I reapplied it several times that day.

On Tuesday the bumps looked better. There was less redness around the hives. For some reason we tried applying Deep Blue Rub to the itchy rash and discovered a new essential oil for hives. The cool/burn brought instant relief to the itching. I only had to apply it twice during the day, then twice on Wednesday. Thursday he didn’t ask for it and wasn’t bothered by itching at all. The spots were small and healing.

DeepBlueRub(new)

Key Ingredients
• Deep Blue essential oil blend of Wintergreen, Camphor, Peppermint, Blue Tansy, German
Chamomile, Helichrysum, and Osmanthus
• Menthol—Provides a cooling effect
• Eucalyptus—Helps to temporarily calm muscle and joint inflammation
• Wintergreen—Supports circulation and brings warmth to the affected area
• Capsicum Frutescens Extract—Warms by triggering heat receptors in surface tissues

Deep Blue isn’t just for sore muscles!

Many of the ingredients in Deep Blue are perfect for hives. Blue Tansy is a natural antihistamine. Helichrysum is good for skin conditions. German Chamomile is good for dealing with itchy skin. Hives is listed as one of peppermint’s primary uses.

For younger children I would dilute the rub with added coconut oil. This rub does warm up the skin and may be too intense for sensitive skin.

Much of what I have learned about essential oils has been by trial and error. The complexity of our bodies and the complexity of essential oils means what works for one person may not work as well for someone else.

What new uses for the oils have you discovered recently?
